Summary: The farm becomes a place of production of vegetables, fruits, eggs, poultry, care for animals and humans, education for children, culture and living.
The problems of building a farm and its environment to support 500 people are immense.
Already today, if we were to feed 500 people, treat them, educate them, offer them leisure, this challenge would be difficult to hold.
But we must meet a much more difficult challenge. To make live this farm while the supplies of electricity are intermittent, that the gasoline and the gas oil have disappeared, that the temperature exceeds the fifty degrees in the summer, that the rains are more and more rare, or on the contrary too abundant that fertilizer is no longer delivered, any more than the "ide" products that made it possible to eliminate insect pests and of course all those that are useful, that water has become a rare commodity, and so on. ..
Yet this is the work we have undertaken and must continue if we want our children a chance to live.
The first problem is water. Men can live with very little water as evidenced by humans living in desert environments. It is still necessary to learn all the gestures that make it possible to live while consuming only the bare minimum. And the five hundred people who make up the population of a farm must all learn and execute them properly. It will be necessary quickly to find the techniques to manufacture the tanks because those plastic will be obsolete in a relatively short time. It will also be necessary to manufacture systems to mount the water, to filter it, to purify it. It will also be necessary to divide the uses. The use by industry decreasing a lot, as well as agricultural uses because there will be more pumps able to propel tons of water on crops, it will give a little flexibility, But even in the farm, water uses will need to be highly controlled.
The second problem is food. It will be necessary to grow vegetables, raise barnyard animals that will serve not only food (alas), work with farmers in the region to produce cereals, milk, etc ... All this will be done in chaotic conditions of temperature, hygrometry, storms and prolonged calm. It is not a question of being able to water as market gardeners do. That's why we use mounds. The experience, ours and that of many fans show convincing results with a minimum of watering, or no watering as in 2018 for example, especially dry year in the north of France.
The third problem is the fall of biodiversity. This term is certainly right but it is often misunderstood. The loss of biodiversity is expressed in the earth first, the fall of the population of earthworms, there is one in five, but they are the ones who bring up the moisture and nutrients for the plants of the depths of the ground. Bacteria and useful fungi have also almost disappeared from cropland. So that they can no longer feed the sown plants except to add fertilizer of all kinds. After the shock, it is unlikely that the necessary fertilizers will be transported, especially since the phosphate mines are almost empty.
The fourth problem is the end of fossil energies. Agriculture is a big consumer of oil. But this oil becomes more and more difficult to extract. The consumption of oil and the amount mined have been decreasing steadily, albeit in a weak but constant way since 2006. Therefore, we must practice an agriculture that will no longer use oil, fertilizers or all poisonous products. And nobody will be able to postpone the five-year decision. It would be desirable to prepare for it.
The energies that we can have are necessarily renewable but fragile. These are forests that are also subject to climate change. If insects and birds can migrate further north, trees and grasses have a hard time getting around.
We see that living a balanced ecosystem will not be easy. This is the problem that members will have to face.
However, gardening work will be much easier than in traditional gardening or market gardening. Vegetable production much more abundant than in other techniques
We believe that we have developed an architecture that works, as in the HELLOIN Beak for example but in many other places, which organizes life cycles, which restores and maintains the equilibrium between humans, animals and nature.
